Sun cream suitable for oily skin: how to choose?

Why choose a sunscreen designed for oily skin?

Firstly, sunscreen should be applied daily, all year round, outdoors to preserve the health of the skin and prevent the signs of aging. Indeed, skin aging depends on two factors:

  • intrinsic aging linked to each person's genetics: it is an inevitable physiological process
  • extrinsic aging linked to the external environment: pollution, tobacco, lifestyle (diet, sleep, stress, etc.) and exposure to the sun. These factors accelerate the aging of the skin, we speak of premature aging. And it is, in particular, long-term exposure to the sun's rays which is the main factor in extrinsic skin aging. This is called photo aging .

Photo aging of the skin is mainly due to UVA rays. Unlike the action of UVB which is direct and visible on the skin with the appearance of sunburn, the action of UVA takes longer to be visible with the appearance of sun spots, early wrinkles and a Dull complexion.

In order to use your sunscreen product on a daily basis, it is important that it suits your skin. In other words, the sunscreen should not increase shine during the day, should not have white marks or a sticky finish. It must have a feel and finish that is suitable for everyday use without problem. Thus, it is best to use a sunscreen product that has been specifically formulated for your skin type. In this article we focus on combination skin and oily skin.

Criteria for selecting sunscreen for oily skin

The choice of sunscreen for oily skin is essentially determined by three factors:

  • the non-comedogenic aspect
  • the mattifying finish
  • SPF (Sun Protection Factor)

Non-comedogenic sunscreen

Given that combination to oily skin has high sebum production which can lead to clogged pores and therefore the appearance of imperfections (whiteheads, black bridges, etc.), it is important to check that the sunscreen chosen is not comedogenic.

To do this, simply test the sunscreen product for a few days without changing anything else in your routine. If the number of imperfections increases, this may be a sign that the product is comedogenic and in this case it may be best to change. Be careful, the increase in the number of imperfections can be linked to other factors such as a change in environment, a hormonal change, stress, emotions or even poor cleaning in the evening. Make sure you use an effective, gentle cleanser in the evening to remove sunscreen properly, for example with a cleansing oil or balm. It is possible, particularly for skin prone to imperfections and for people applying makeup, to do a double cleansing in the evening, that is to say, to clean your face twice with the same product or using of different products.

Mattifying sun cream

Since high sebum production causes shine on the skin during the day, it is important to choose a mattifying sunscreen to help reduce and control shine. To do this, it must contain absorbent powders such as silica, corn starch or clay.

Sunscreen with good SPF

It is obviously important to also ensure that the sunscreen protects against both UVB and UVA. To do this, the word broad spectrum must be indicated or the product must have an SPF factor with the UVA sign circled. 1

Regarding SPF, it is the abbreviation: Sun Protection Factor which means sun protection factor in French. An SPF15 protects against 93% of UVB, that is to say it absorbs 93% of UVB while the remaining 7% penetrates the skin, an SPF30 protects against almost 97% of UVB and an SPF50 protects against 98% UVB. It is therefore recommended by health authorities to use at least SPF30. Concerning SPF50+ products this means that the SPF is above 60.

How to apply sunscreen to a face with oily skin?

Sunscreen is applied at the end of your cosmetic routine before makeup. Here is an example of an application order:

  1. cleanser
  2. eye area
  3. serum
  4. cream
  5. Solar cream
  6. makeup

For combination to oily acne-prone skin, the tip is to use sunscreen directly after serum without using moisturizer. Indeed, sunscreens are already moisturizers so they may be sufficient for this skin type. It is therefore appropriate to apply in order:

  1. cleanser
  2. eye area
  3. serum
  4. Solar cream
  5. makeup

Of course, this may not be suitable for sensitive skin. The skin may lack comfort or feel tight during the day. Also, it is always possible to add a moisturizer before the sunscreen. In this case, it is preferable to go for products with a light texture. Choose gel, gel cream or very fluid textures so as not to increase shine.
