Kojic acid is a natural-origin active ingredient produced by certain species of Aspergillus fungi during rice fermentation, a traditional use documented in Japan. It is recognized in scientific literature for its action on complexion evenness. In literature, kojic acid is linked to regulation of melanogenesis via its documented action on tyrosinase (copper chelation, a cofactor of the enzyme). Kojic acid is also associated in literature with antioxidant properties, themselves linked to protection against oxidative stress and environmental factors that contribute to the appearance of pigmentation irregularities. It is documented in scientific literature for its interest in pigmentation irregularities related to external factors, aging, or skin sensitivities. Clinical studies report visible improvement in complexion evenness after several weeks of regular use. It is sometimes combined in formulations with other complementary actives (arbutin, vitamin C) for a combined profile on complexion evenness.
In summary, a natural-origin active ingredient associated in scientific literature with regulation of melanogenesis and visible complexion evenness.
