Centella Asiatica, also known as gotu kola or tiger herb, is an Asian plant widely documented scientifically for its rich triterpene composition. Its main biologically active compounds are asiaticoside, madecassoside, asiatic acid, and madecassic acid. Available data associate it with several effects on skin appearance. It supports skin hydration, notably through its link to glycosaminoglycan production, hydrophilic polysaccharides of the extracellular matrix including hyaluronic acid. It is also linked to supporting mechanisms involved in maintaining skin structure, which relate to visible reduction of fine lines. Its antioxidant properties contribute to protection against oxidative stress, a factor linked to visible signs of aging. Its documented soothing properties help improve comfort for sensitive skin.
